Week 10 - The Last Week

Finally- I've done all my coop teaching-
Wow.....the time really had gone- ^^;;

I think i tied up pretty well with my students as a last week.
The classes focused on revising what they've learn so far.
Said good-bye with my extra morning and afternoon class students and we watched movie at the last class to have bit more relaxing and confortable feeling for a reward to my students who have studied very hard ^^*
Also we shared a bit of snack too~ hahaha

And as it was my last official teaching day so 1A class gave me a thank card!
What a surprise T.T I felt so happy and it was so touching!
Oh! We took a class picture too~~~~~

At the meeting with Elizabeth, she told me that I've done my work very well and I was very helpful. I got lots of good comments from her~~
I was very happy to hear that ^^*

I think I'm so lucky!!
I had too great students as well as too good teachers as colleages and a supervisor.

I've learned a lot for my ESL teaching with this experience.
It will be the time that i can't forget.
I bet it was a very precious opportunity and time for my future!
Actually...I can feel that my teaching skills have been improved and got much better and heaps of ideas for how to dealing with at the context of ESL teaching~~~~ *^^*

That's why I'm going to keep helping TOPS class, 1A , as a volunteer even my coop work has finished~! *^^*

Anyway !!
I want to thank for everything~~~~~~
and wish me a luck for the rest of work that I have to do to finish the Coop paper!
"Presentation and E-portfolio"

OMG......getting worried already....!!!!

Week 9

20. July - 24. July

It was the first week of teaching after the holiday...so i think that's why there were not many students who came for my extra afternoon classes...T.T hahaha
Actually i was kind of expecting that...
You know...it is possible to forget about something after the 4 weeks of holiday~!

Anyway! i had small number of students whole this week so i had lots of small talks with my students~ I think it was a very useful time to be honest! Because it provided more time for low level of students to practice their speaking~!

It was pretty relaxing and easy starting week-

And the "next week" is gonna be my final teaching week....!!
Time really flies....!!! OMG...!!

Week 8

15. June – 19. June

It was the last week of teaching before the holiday.
I got 2 more weeks to go after the holiday so it means that I’ve done almost my coop experience- 128 hours out of 150 hours.

The time went so fast…!
It has flied…!

I think it means I’m really enjoying in TOPS classes ^^*

I found that there are lots of students who don’t like the holiday?!
It was quite surprising to me because I love (and I’m sure all of my classmates and other friends) and always look forward to the holiday.
I asked them why they don’t like a holiday and they said it is boring, nothing to do and no English.

Yes I understand what they mean…

As they are refugee students they just love to be at school as they learn English, talking and interacting with others etc.
I think they are the students who really study hard and motivated.
I haven’t seen this much motivated, kind, positive, enthusiastic, dedicated students-! ^^*

I’m so appreciated and happy that they and also I have this kind of chance.

I gave them some of ideas what they can do during the holiday, like going local/school library to read books, watch cartoons at TV2 or TV3, talking to neighbor at least once a day, going out for lunch and so on ^^;;
I really hope they enjoy their winter holiday~!

At the meeting with Elizabeth, she asked me whether I can carry on the double tutoring with 1A students after the coop experience.
Actually…. that was what I was thinking….^^;;
because I’ve felt that 1A class needs bit of extra help most of the time..!

I said if my time table of 2nd semester works out to help them then I’d love to carry on~!
I think this is a very valuable opportunity for me and don’t want to miss it~!
I hope my time table could fit to help them out-

Week 7

8. June – 12. June

We had a little quiz on wednesday class.
I said there’s a prize, chocolate bar, for the first person who gets all answers right.
I wasn’t expecting that much excitement from students but all of them were very excited and encouraged to get all quizzes right as quick as possible ~ haha
There’s no matter being an adult or kids for a prize hahaha

On Friday when I had a meeting with Elizabeth, she said I've been doing so well~!!
Always prepared, enthusiastic and trying hard- ^^;;

I was really, really happy and appreciated with her comments and She even said if I need any recommendation in the future she would love to do that for me~!!

WOW! What a big accomplishment~!

I’ve learned a lot in ESL teaching so far and also got good feedback from my work supervisor~
Never be better than this~ ^^*

Week 6

1.June – 5. June

From this week I’m going to do one more hour of doubling tutoring for Level 1A.

As I said before they are the students who need lots of support and sometimes it is bit hard to be controlled by one teacher.
Elizabeth felt that as well so she and I decided this will be much beneficial for me as well as them.
Yeah~ Of course. I wanna be the person who is necessary and helpful- ^^*

Week 5

25. May – 29. May

* Teaching plan (week 5~ week 10)

- Level 2: Health (vocab, short writing, reading) + making question forms & appropriate answers
- Level 3: Health
(reading + vocab & expressions = lexical approach)
- General speaking class (mon/ wed): “Going places”
(talking about harbor cruise, sightseeing / landmarks around Auckland+ NZ, outdoor activities, planning a trip, making a reservation etc.)

This is my outline, long-term plan, for the rest of 5 weeks.
I want to help my students to be able to build a lot more cultural and language knowledge about the topics that they study in their own general classes and I chose the topic “going places” for my extra afternoon class to teach additional useful information as living in New Zealand.
I will provide as much time as I can to practice speaking in classes with various kinds of ways, like listening, building vocab + expressions, role plays and so on.

This Wednesday the teacher of 1A, Joanna, hurt her back so another teacher came instead of her and I learned something from her-

The 1A students are the students who are real beginners and there are bit more gaps in levels for individuals so some of students do well but some of them are really behind and they need lots of attention and help.
However, the one-day teacher seemed like doesn’t know how to manage well about it that I’ve learned through previous weeks and struggled…
I felt sorry for her as well as for students because the teacher was lost and it made students lost too!
And the materials that she prepared were too hard for them!!!
Also the topic was not related at all with the themes that they’ve studied and because of it I could easily find that students were very overwhelmed, confused and looked very bored….!!

It was the hardest class until now….^^;
But it was good chance for me actually-
As it gave me a chance again to remind myself about the importance of being a good and efficient teacher- !

Week 4

18. May – 22. May

First of all, I had a first meeting with my academic supervisor, Beverley Roser, this Friday at coop class.
She seemed very nice~ ^^* even though telling her about my coop plan was bit nervous.

She looked like quite surprised when she heard I’ve already started working and it’s at AUT~! Haha On the other hand, I was bit happy about me.
Why? I’m little bit ahead than the others- ^^;; Just a bit of relief…^^;;

My lessons went well as like usual~ I think I’m very lucky!
I have so good and understanding students as well as supporters~!

There is one important thing that I learn this week
– “Having long-them aim s and objectives in teaching.”

Elizabeth told me this in the meeting of this week.
She said it is very important to have long-term aims when we teach students.
It makes teachers can measure students after weeks and terms.
It is the obvious evidence that students are improved and learned also it can be the feedback for teachers themselves as referring the achievements or failures of students.
Also, it is necessary especially for low level students as they need a lot more repetition.

Therefore I made a decision to have a long-term and specific goal in my coop teaching which is very similar when I write a learning contract for coop paper.
– The measurable and specific outcomes.

Now…I need some time to develop better teaching plans for the rest of weeks….!!

Week 3

11. May – 15. May

In last week’s meeting Elizabeth suggested me to have extra afternoon classes based on what they learn from their general classes. – Relating the topic – instead of jumping into absolute new topics.
So I asked Karen (level 2 teacher) and Kim (level 3 teacher) to prepare their lessons according to what they do in classes.
Mostly they are covering the topic of ‘health’, like symptoms, illnesses, injuries, visiting a doctor etc. As I teaching the relating topic from this week I found that students were more participated and their confidence as well as interests got raised. Good~ Good~~ ^^*

Week 2

4. May – 8. May

During the weekend I planned for my lessons but I couldn’t finish what I planned…
The lessons took much more time than I thought.
Be honest…’Thank god…!’ It is much better than the time left…hahaha

When I discussed about this with Elizabeth she said it stills happens to her?!?
What a surprising!
I expected this kind of things never happen to professional teachers like Elizabeth!
She told me that it is better than the time left. ^^;;
She recommended me to have a lesson plan as not too tight or not too loose and if I couldn’t finish everything that I planned then I can use them in next class.
Yes….I’m still a baby teacher…
so easily get nervous and sometimes moving this way and that way and lost…! ^^;;

And! I found myself bit struggling to remember students’ names….
To be honest…their names are hard…T.T
So!! I decided to make a name card to be a better teacher!
I should call their names instead of pointing or calling only the names that I know…^^*

The teaching - Week 1

27. Apr – 1. May

The journey of my coop experience, the ESL teaching at TOPS course, has started.

I spent lots of time to get to know the students this week because I think it is one of the important factors to be a good and friendly teacher and it went very well.
When I went for classes, double tutoring as well as my own afternoon classes, they were very welcoming and accepting me as a teacher even though I’m there for my teaching experience.
I felt really involved as a teacher and appreciated with the students’ attitude toward me. It actually made me less nervous and gave me a cheerful feeling. ^^*

There were different levels of students, from Level 1B (Beginner) to Level 3(Post-intermediate) who came for my extra afternoon classes and I found that it is pretty hard to carry on the lesson as there are huge gaps among students especially with the reading .
I talked about it with my work-supervisor, Elizabeth, and we decided to change the time table for different levels. – Monday and Wednesday afternoon classes are for any level of students and Tuesday morning class is for only level 2 and Tuesday afternoon is for level 3 students (reading).

Also, instead of having reading and writing classes on Monday and Wednesday we decided to focus on ‘speaking’ that students need more practice and help as most of students don’t speak English at home and the school or class is the place where they speak and practice English.

I think the first week went pretty well than I thought and I found myself as very enjoying it! I hope I can learn lots of new things in ESL teaching and want to keep this motivation until the end-

Meeting with my work-supervisor

3rd April.

It was the first meeting with my work supervisor. ^^
When I told her bit about co-op class she already had some ideas about it as one of her colleages had a co-op student few years ago at TOPS classes.
And I asked her whether it is possible to finish my 150 working hours before the semester 2 starts. (I was sure that my 2nd semester will be very very busy so i wanted to finish my work experience in the 1st semester if it is possible - i was just think...^^;;)

She said there seems like no problem at all and she would have that in mind when she works out for my working timetable. I was very appreciated with her assistance.

AND!!!! actually i was thinking to be a helper at ESL, TOPS , classes but Elizabeth recommended me to have my own classes-!!! Huh??....!! My own classes????!!!!!!!!

At first time i was in a huge surprise....>.< as i do not have much experience in teaching especially in a classroom context....
However, she said it would be much better for me to have my own classes, as extra afternoon classes for TOPS students, which I can learn much more than just assisting teachers.
Even though i was not sure i can manage them very well but I felt very appreciated to her because she was believing and fully support ingme ^^*
She was giving me a big opportunity which is very valuable!! - there's no way to say no~~~~ *^^*

Few days later, (19. April) I received my teaching time-table from Elizabeth
: "16 hours a week altogether so you will have most covered by the end of the semester"

* Monday 2-3 Speaking/discussion/pronunciation

* Tuesday 9-10 General English with level 2 - WT712
Tuesday 10-11 Double Tutoring 1A - WT702 (no preparation)
Tuesday 11- 12 Double Tutoring 1B - WT501 (no preparation)
Tuesday 12-1 Double Tutoring with level 3 - WT707 (no preparation)
Tuesday 2-3 Writing

* Wednesday 11-12 Double Tutoring level 2 - WT712 (no preparation)
Wednesday 12-1 Double Tutoring 1A - WT702 (no preparation)
Wednesday 1-2 Double Tutoring 1A - WT702 (no preparation)
Wednesday 2-3 Reading

Finally, everythings are arranged and my teaching will start from 27. April-
It is the Big Day~~~!!!! *^^*
It is the actual time that I can use the skills that I learned and prove my ability in ESL teaching.
Wow.....!
I got many things to prepare!
I hope students would like me...^^;;; and want to enjoy the time together!!

Let's go~~~~~~~~~~ Bring it on~~~~~~~~~!!!

Finding a placement

Last year I did CLTA paper at school and suddenly remembered the last class that I had-

It was the class that talked about future options such as finding a ESOL job and further study courses etc. As I was looking for a voluntary ESL teaching job I sent an email to one of my lectures from CLTA, Heather Richards.
I explained her about my situation and asked to help me. Fortunately she said she will see what she can find~~ Yeah~~~~ ^^ What a big relief~~~!! ( 24. March)

Few days later, I got an email back from her and she said one of TOPS Classes teacher , Elizabeth Brugh,would like to have me !!!
Wow!~~ How lucky I am~~!! *^^*
Because I've met her before when I had my classroom practice paper last year.
She was a colleage of my mentor who share the office together.
It was very happy to hear that she will be my work supervisor ! Yeah~~ not a total stranger...>.< which will make me less nervous....^^* (30. March)

I sent an email to Elizabeth straight away to arrange the meeting and I had a sleepless night...Half nervous and half exciting!!! ^^;;

20 March - Keys to Job Search

Today we talked about general job search skills such as what kind of jobs are available for coop, where can find them and how to find them.
I think it was very useful session.
Actually, I’ m feeling quite stressful to look for a job because I haven’t got my placement yet.
I got some ideas where I could work and where I want to work so I had look through the internet and newspapers but haven’t got ‘the one’.
I know it is not late up till now but I hope I can start working as soon as possible.

There are some important points that I've learn from today’s class.

1) I should have goals when I search for a job.
2) I should understand the skills that I have.
3) I should understand the employment market. (understanding the industry that I aiming to)
4) I should use different kinds of method to find a job – networking, contacting employers directly, going career fairs instead of sticking to internet and newspapers etc.
5) I should have well planned strategy to find appropriate job for me.

After I did the ‘Job search readiness evaluation’ I was pretty shocked with myself because I found that I’m not that ready to look for a job or even get one than I expected.
I’ve found I don’t know much about employers as well as the ways to promote myself to employers which I think very important when search for a job.

I think I’ve got lots of things to work on from now……Let’s start again properly!!

“The job is not going to just come to me!
I have to work actively to find perfect one!”

13. Mar. 2009

Our coop portfolio will be made as an e-portfolio this year using 'myportfolio (mahara) site'
Hmm...I've worked with e-portfolio in irefelct class last year...
but....i almost forgot how to manage it..!
Wow.....I'm worried... I hope I can do this well again like I did well for ireflect-
I'm sure it will get better as time goes by??!!? ^^;;

6. Mar : The first COOP class-

This is my last year at uni and I must manage well with this coop paper !
I 've heard about this paper from my firends and most of them said it was hard!
but they also said it was quite helpful and good experience for them although there were lots of stress and work pressure.

Anyway- my first impression for the class??!? hmm....
It made me more worried, nervous and already stressful- !! >.<

Our class had a chance to listen from Frank ,a previous student from the last year's coop who introduced and gave some advice for our class, and he said it was hard to find "a job" which didn't surprise me at all - That was exactly what I was expecting..... T.T

' How can i find a job?...... where? ...and how?......how......!?!? '

However! after I heard about Frank's coop experience my thoughts bit changed.
It gave me some confience that i might cope with well with coop even though there are definite difficulties at the beginning, especially finding an appropriate job for me, and I got sure that it would be a great opportunity to explore the real world before I really get into after my graduation. Also when I heard I can get a support from my academic supervisor it made me much relieved ^^;;

I really want to have a job that related with ESOL/ ESL teaching because it's the field that i'm interested in as well as it's my major (minor in TESOL). I hope it will be not that hard to find a job in that area....really...!!!!!!!! Wish me a luck~~

And one more thing! I have to keep reminding myself for the 'time management' - one of the essential elements to survive in this paper!

This is an extra about me...

Hi, there~

This is the blog that has extra information about me on coop.
